Laurie or Fritz?

Now, just in case you are wondering this blog post is about the two characters penned by that lovely authoress: Louisa May Alcott.
I saw on a blog that I recently followed that she had done a blog post on Little Women (1994) and that she'd read the books but had always thought that Laurie and Jo should have ended up together.
And that got me thinking. In the past month or so I've been reading Little Men. I finished it last Sunday and am now trying to get into the mood to read and finish Jo's Boys. I love Louisa May Alcott's writing! She was so skilled!
Anyway, that blog post on the blog about Laurie should have married Jo just stuck with me. Until today when I decided to talk about it.

Now, as we all should know, Laurie is the next door neighbour in Little Women.
He originally meets Jo and then all the other sisters and becomes their closest friend and neighbour. Music is his passion and he loves to get up to any larks that take his fancy. Bear with me please, I've only read Little Women once, the same with all the other Little Women books, but that's what I remember. Anyway. I really liked him. In Good Wives he goes away to college and becomes a little bit immature with how he spends his money and the way he wastes his time. When he comes home he proposes to Jo. She refuses him. He goes off in a huff and to Europe where he wastes his time and money. Until Amy pops up. Then he feels like he might have a second chance. Long story short, he ends up marrying Amy and I believe that it was the right choice. The thing is I don't think that Laurie and Jo should have ended up together. I think I'll explain my thoughts much more eloquently if I simply copy and paste the proposal from the 1994 version of Little Women. Take note that it is actually Little Women and Good Wives in one movie:

Laurie: "I have loved you since the moment I clapped eyes on you. What could be more reasonable than to marry you? "
Jo:"We'd kill each other."
Laurie: "Nonsense!"
Jo:"Neither of us can keep our temper-..."
Laurie: "I can, unless provoked."
Jo "We're both stupidly stubborn, especially you. We'd only quarrel!"
Laurie: "I wouldn't!"
Jo "You can't even propose without quarreling."

So yeah you get the idea. They just sound like they wouldn't get along because they are so alike in character and both need a more calmer person to be their life' partners.
As we all know Jo goes to New York and there she meets Professor Friedrich Bhaer and things just clicked. He's a kind man, more mature than Laurie and you find out that he cares for his two young nephews Franz and Emil even though he is quite poor himself. He's more quiet than Laurie and more wise. He also encourages Jo in her writing and gives his honest opinion because she asked him.

In short I like Laurie better. But Friedrich seems the perfect match for Jo. Kind, loyal, and not easily provoked. And Laurie, well he seems the best match for Amy. Rich, finds pleasure in music and art and all that fashionable stuff, and under Amy's calm hand he settles into an admirable gentleman.
So there you are, here are my ponderings and I must say that I hope you understood what I was saying because it doesn't seem like I've outlined them that clearly!

God Bless

  1. I agree with your opinion. (Its so frustrating, I like to post comments but I usually can't write anything but "I agree." :) I only read Little Men and Little Women a few years ago, so I'm not much of an expert.
